Signal Intelligence
Signal intelligence refers to the gathering of information by intercepting signals, for example through radiomonitoring. Intelligence, in this context, is knowledge about the world around us to help a country's civilian and military leaders make more informed decisions, enabling them to cope with potential and emerging threats to their country's interests.
Rohde & Schwarz assists you in solving your complex tasks by providing all-in-one signal intelligence solutions for searching for, detecting, analyzing and jamming all types of communications signals from HF to SHF as well as non-communications signals – for any modulation and transmission method. Whether voice, fax or data, analog or digital signals, whether encryption or LPI methods such as frequency hopping or spread spectrum techniques are used – we have the optimum solution to meet your requirements.

Rohde & Schwarz COMINT/CESM systems include antennas, receivers, direction finders and signal analysis devices − all from Rohde & Schwarz. The systems use the R&S RAMON system software, which offers the following features:
- Direct control of radiomonitoring equipment from workstation computers
- Storage and evaluation of collected data
- Control and monitoring of information flow in a networked system with workstations located at one or multiple sites
- Simplified routine procedures due to automatic workflow control
Stationary COMINT systems

Stationary COMINT systems are used to acquire information about the security situation of one’s own country and to assess the situation of other countries. Based on the intelligence gained, the political and military leaders of a country can be provided with the required information and assisted in their decision-making processes. Upcoming crises can thus be recognized at an early stage, for example.
COMINT systems can also be implemented as semi-mobile or transportable systems installed in shelters. They are typically used to monitor large geographic areas, and may even be designed as highly complex, nationwide systems comprising a large number of workstations.
R&S RAMON offers solutions to meet the above requirements. R&S RAMON COMINT systems are deployed at customer sites all over the world. They can be operated as single-site systems (i.e. command and control station with operator workstations and sensors all at one site) or distributed across multiple sites, for example to form nationwide systems encompassing a network of remote-controlled sensor stations and a central command and control station.
Mobile CESM systems
Communications electronic support measures (CESM) systems are used to gather information on-site. Application examples are missions outside one’s own country (e.g. UN peacekeeping and peacemaking missions) as well as missions conducted during conflicts or in emergency situations at home. Gathering communications intelligence, therefore, helps in providing immediate protection and support at home and abroad. There is no clear-cut dividing line between CESM systems and COMINT systems; both depend on and complement each other.
CESM systems are usually mobile, i.e. they are installed in vehicles or on board ships. Since vehicles or shelters permit only low mast heights, CESM systems usually cover a limited geographic area. Maximum mobility – and possibly armor protection – are often required, as the systems are deployed right in the center of action.
Information acquisition using CESM systems is supported by basic reference data delivered by COMINT systems. The information gained will be directly incorporated into the planning and execution of operations, including warning one’s own forces against threats. Work in a CESM system is therefore carried out under enormous time pressure.
These important requirements are taken into account in the design of CESM system solutions offered by Rohde & Schwarz. R&S RAMON systems have already been successfully integrated in a wide variety of platforms, including land vehicles, shelters, aircraft, ships and submarines.
Our customers benefit from the many years of experience and the expertise Rohde & Schwarz has in system integration, as well as from the modular design and networking capability of the company’s hardware and software components.
